Makeup Inspiration - Monster High (Part 2)

I still love Monster High, and even though I do, it still surprises me that it's so successful. I guess that even though we're in an age where cute style is diluted by sex, these freaky-fabulous little monsters can appeal to little girls. They're quintessentially quirky - and that's what's so great about them, especially when you think about the other fashion dolls out there, especially Barbie (both Monster High and Barbie are made by Mattel), who has remained essentially the same for over fifty years.

On a different note, since I last posted, my MH collection has doubled from two to four dolls (I have since acquired Holt Hyde and wave 2 "School's Out" Clawdeen Wolf). Clawdeen and Lagoona are currently competing to be my favorite doll.

Back on track. Today, I'll be explaining how to get creepy-cool makeup looks inspired by Clawdeen Wolf, Frankie Stein, and Ghoulia Yelps.

Clawdeen Wolf

Clawdeen, the daughter of the Werewolf, is the epitome of fierce. She wears a popping purple eyeshadow to match her luxe outfit, and her dark mauve lips fit into the same color family. Her look is pretty easy.

EYES: OPTIONAL: Line your lids with a black eyeliner.
Using a purple eyeshadow (preferably in a shade of violet), cover your whole eyelid.
Then, using a royal purple or deep purple eyeshadow, fill in the space between your brow and lid.
Coat your lashes with a brown-black or black mascara.

LIPS: Coat your lips with a dark mauve or berry lipstick.

Easy, huh? But it's still ultra-different from what you see every day, and it's very glam.

Frankie Stein

Frankie Stein, the daughter of Frankenstein, is the main protagonist of Monster High. Despite the fact that she's undead, she manages to stay pretty fresh-faced. Her makeup is very easy.

EYES: Using a light pink or lavender eyeshadow, cover the entire lid and the area below the brow.  Again, I'm basing these makeups on the dolls, not the box art or webisodes, so if you want to use a more purple shadow, that's fine too.
Coat your lashes with a black mascara. Frankie has the longest eyelashes out of all the dolls, so in order to achieve that look, you'll need a mascara that really extends.

FACE: OPTIONAL: Use a translucent powder to suck up any oil on your face. This is recommended to get Frankie's pale, fresh-faced look.

LIPS: Apply a red lipstick (preferably a pure red and one without pink tones), and for an extra punch to the pucker, finish with clear gloss.
Ghoulia Yelps

Ghoulia is the daughter of the Zombies, and she's super nerdy (and therefore lovable). Her makeup is kind of hard to see because of her glasses, so I'm posting a picture of the doll with the glasses off for reference. Since Ghoulia is so pale, her red lipstick really stands out. She also wears dark makeup, which reminds us she's a zombie (she's so pretty otherwise). This is probably the most complex makeup out of the three.

EYES: OPTIONAL: Line your lids with a black liner.
Cover your lower lid (from just above the liner to about halfway up) with a light brown shadow.
Use a cocoa or dark brown shadow to color the rest of the lid and all the way up to the top of the eye socket. Avoid going any higher so you don't get raccoon eyes.
Coat your lashes with a black mascara.

OPTIONAL: Wear a nerdy-chic pair of glasses (prescription or non) to add a little spunk!

LIPS: Choose a red lipstick - fire engine red isn't necessary, though it will resemble Ghoulia's makeup more than a red with pink tints. To amp the look up even more, apply a clear gloss on top of the lipstick.

These are pretty self-explanatory if you know about Monster High, but if you've never seen the dolls before, perhaps they'll provide a new source of inspiration. Do you like Monster High? Do you have any of the dolls or other merchandise? Do you watch the webisodes?
