Fashion Inspiration - Pokemon

Today I've created two outfits based on Pokemon. :)

First Outfit - Ivysaur

Ivysaur

The floral headband (which looks like Ivysaur's flower bud) paired with the funky sneakers (I totally want these) are a nice contrast between pretty and spunky! It's also a good transition outfit from winter to spring.
Second Outfit - Ninetales
Ninetales

Ninetales, according to the weirdos on the Internet, oozes sex. I wanted to combine hot reds with soft creams to create a pretty yet sultry look. I love the tights -they are spidery and sensual.

Just Me and My Cheap Lipstick.

I'm not gonna lie to you - I don't like to spend a lot of money on makeup. However, I do wear it every day, and I like to add a little stand-out color on occasion, so I like to find inexpensive stuff.

For mascara, it's Loreal Voluminous with the curved brush. I like to use a newer tube, an older tube, and a nearly dried-out tube all at the same time - the dried-out tube is for the lower lashes. The stuff's like, six to eight bucks, which ain't too bad.

As for lipstick, I just got into wearing it this year. I like big or interesting colors. And you know what's cheaper than dirt? NYC lipstick. For suresies. I've got the Ultra Moist LipWear in Ruby (305) and the Ultra Last LipWear in Flirty (417) and Berry Rich (416). They work well. I mean, of course you're gonna have to reapply when you eat and stuff, but otherwise they're lovely, and they're usually less than two bucks. There are some fun shades that really pop.

At some point I'd like to try orange lipstick...if I can find a good, inexpensive one I'll be sure to write about it. Any recommendations?

Fashion Inspiration - Spyro the Dragon

Some of you may remember this little guy. His name is Spyro, and he stars in a classic video game series. Spyro the Dragon first came out in 1998 for Playstation. It's the first video game my parents bought me and my brother as kids, and it's one of the first I remember playing. The original Spyro trilogy was made by Insomniac Games, and they later sold the series to Universal. After that, the series pretty much went down the toilet. However, Spyro was a big part of my childhood, and even though he's a little purple dragon, who says we can't draw fashion inspiration from him? Here are a few outfits inspired by characters from the original trilogy.

 Outfit 1 - Spyro
Spyro
For Spyro, I wanted to combine cool and tough items. My favorite part of this outfit is the sunglasses because they capture his chill but smartass attitude.

Outfit 2 - Elora
Elora

Elora is a faun from Avalar, the world Spyro is transported to in Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! Elora is spunky and also a bit of a smart-aleck like her dragon friend, demonstrated by the red tights and sparkly rose earrings. To achieve a hoof effect, I added high heels.

Outfit 3 - Zoe
Zoe

Zoe is a fairy who helps Spyro and marks his checkpoints. She first appeared in Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! I love the scarf because it is sheer and multicolored, representing Zoe's wings. I also made the outfit simple so it would balance the wild red wig. I would love to try wearing a wig somewhere other than a party sometime.

Remember, these are just starting points! And if you have any other Spyro-related ideas, be sure to share them in the comments!

I won't be posting for the next couple of days - I'm going to St. Louis for an audition! But to keep you entertained, here is a hilarious video from your favorite fashion icon, Mr. T...?

Welcome to Quirky Girl

Hi, I'm Samantha. I look for inspiration in strange places. I love to put together funky, odd, and colorful outfits, though sometimes my style can drift back to classic. This blog is for anyone who looks at the people around them and sees nothing but sweatpants and fleece, people who strive to stand out. This blog is also for girls who dare to be themselves, no matter what that entails.

I like a lot of weird stuff. If you're looking for style inspired by last night's episode of Gossip Girl or Glee or if you want to see how I incorporate a pair of Abercrombie and Fitch jeans into an outfit, this is not the blog for you. However, if you like to look different from everyone else, if you like fashion inspired by artsy and funny movies, cartoons, video games, musicals, and (international) celeb and "real-life" quirky girls, sit back and relax.

I also hope you'll share your style with us, and I look forward to reading your comments.
Now then, to give you all a start on where I come from style-wise:

  • One of my big style icons is Yuki Isoya, one of Japan's most popular female vocalists, now a solo act but formerly of 90's band Judy and Mary. To me, she is one of the quintessential "quirky girls." I mean, just look at that skirt. It's so colorful and poofy! Yuki, the ultimate female rock star, uses the stage, an "anything-goes" environment, as an outlet to wear whatever she wants.
  • I am currently obsessed with wearing scarves and bandannas...as headwraps and headbands. They look great with almost anything. It's hard to force myself to not wear one every day. I'm a theatre student, and our costume shop has so many silk and nylon scarves. I was in heaven looking through them!
  • I love leggings and legwarmers. However, I firmly believe that leggings are not pants and that you shouldn't wear them without a skirt or a shirt that completely covers your rear. No one wants to see that. As for legwarmers, I prefer my mom's vintage ones to the pairs I bought this winter at Wet Seal. They are falling apart, and my mom's, while a little loose, overall bunch up very nicely.
  • I like bold lipstick, and I've been experimenting with makeup lately. Just because no one else is wearing fun colors doesn't mean you shouldn't.
  • I want the headpieces from the movie Black Swan. They have got to be the coolest things I have ever seen. I found some similar ones on Etsy, but they are WAY too expensive. I wonder if I could make them myself. I might try.
  • This spring, I'm most excited for...dresses! I'm looking forward to wearing a floral or patterned dress with a head scarf and sneakers (hopefully Converse, though my feet are so small I may have to buy kids'). This winter, my style has been super funky, and while I don't plan to completely throw that out, I also want to try some soft, feminine ensembles.
I'm off to class. Philosophy :(. But let me know how you stay quirky, and for more off-the-wall fun, be sure to log in again soon!

Love,
Samantha
