Weekend Shopping

What's your favorite store? My current fav is Heritage 1981. I made a trip to the mall over the weekend, and I am quite happy with my Heritage and Icing finds.

Swag:
Icing - Leopard-print scarf
Heritage 1981 - Camel-colored faux leather jacket, black and white striped cardigan, blue and tan meshy sweater, big green and gold cocktail ring

And they also had this cute little nurse Hello Kitty! She cost $6.80, and the proceeds go to the Red Cross.

I got the scarf to go with the leopard heels I got at KMart (I love them for shoes, and they carry my size - 5W). A big thanks to KMart and Jaclyn Smith for making shoes for ladies with small feet. Check them out!

I think fashion just went a little more downhill...

Lately at school I've been noticing what kind of clothes I have to wear for people to think I'm "dressed up." I wear a cute skirt with a color-coordinated T-shirt and someone comments, "You look very dressed up today." I go to tap class wearing slacks and a button-up shirt and people ask me why I'm so "dressed up."

...I don't know what you're talking about. I didn't think I was that "dressed up." I was trying to look kind of nice for an audition while still being comfortable. I live off-campus and it was just easier that way.

Then when I start going really glam with lots of accessories, no one says anything about being too "dressed up." Every once and a while I'll get a compliment, but never "you're dressed up." WHAT ON EARTH IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?

I'm going to keep dressing how I want no matter what these people say, but I think it's kind of sad that if you make an effort at school, you're "dressed up." I'm not the kind of girl who wants to go to school in a T-shirt and sweats. In fact, it kills me that we're not supposed to wear skirts to tap class (although people have been doing it lately; I might have to try and see if I get any crap about it) - telling me not to wear skirts is like telling a pregnant lady not to eat the last piece of chocolate cake.

Mmm, cake.

Fashion Inspiration - Yuki Isoya

One of my favorite bands is Judy and Mary, a Japanese pop/rock band from the 90's. The lead singer, Yuki Isoya (who is now a solo artist and goes by the name YUKI), is absolutely divine. Though not nearly as extreme as Lady Gaga, she went crazy with fashion onstage and off in her JAM days, and she remains very fashion foward today. I envy her ability to wear her crazy ideas and make them look great. Here are a few of my favorite YUKI looks. I won't be going into the extremely crazy, but these looks are definitely edgy and may not fit everyone's tastes.

There are two things I really like about this outfit - the mismatched thigh-highs and the swim goggles as an accessory. I would love to try wearing goggles, but I'm afraid they'll look stupid.

The first picture is the opening frame from JAM's video for "Dokidoki." The second is a screenshot I took from the aforementioned video. The band members are all dressed in school uniform-inspired outfits with a fashionable twist.  I love the tailored emblem jackets, Yuki's beret, and her plaid pants.

Oh man...look at those leopard-print boots! I love the comfy yet edgy rocker feel of this outfit. The skirt has a DIY look to it, and the custom shirt (which says YUKKY, her nickname, in the same font the band KISS uses) is something I wish I could have for myself (with her name, though, not mine). This look wouldn't be hard to imitate though - a band shirt with some killer boots or leopard shoes with a denim or midi skirt would be super cute.

Okay, I know I've already posted this photo before, but I cannot do a post on YUKI without it. Obviously, this is a stage look (though I would kill to have a chance to wear that skirt). While this would take extreme guts to wear in real life, perhaps a cool skirt or tutu like this could be worn to a themed party?

Have you heard of Judy and Mary? Do you like them, or are you going to listen to them after reading this post? And what do you think of Yuki's clothes? Let me know in the comments below! :)

Please, Wear Plaid (Without Looking Like Everyone Else)

Plaid is almost never out of style, but this fall it's gaining attention as a trend. I have mixed feelings about this. I like plaid as much as the next girl. It's put-together and can be pretty or funky, depending on the colors/print or how you style it. However, I'm sick and tired of seeing those damn plaid shirts that everyone wears...you know, the ones with black checks that come in just about every color of the rainbow? The ones that people throw on with a pair of jeans and think it's high-fashion?

...yeah, these.

FOR. THE. LOVE. OF. GOD. People are passing this off as high-fashion. Everyone has their bad days - the other day I went to get my remaining school stuff with my dad and brother, and I was wearing knockoff Soffe shorts and a Japanese Frosted Flakes T-shirt, an outfit of which I am not proud - but for the love of all that is holy, how did this get to be a trend? I can see it a little more if you're a guy, but I think you can still be a little more creative, especially when everyone's wearing this.

I'm not saying you shouldn't wear plaid shirts. I'm saying you shouldn't wear the stereotypical scene kid plaid shirt that looks like it belongs on a lumberjack. I'm all for smaller checks or even the big ones in small doses, but if you don't want to blend into the crowd, take my advice and veer away from the "cool kids" shirt.

Truth is, there are always lots of cute plaid products out. Try wearing a plaid skirt instead of a top, or if you're a little nervous about plaid, start with some neat accessories, like a scarf or a purse. They make just about everything in plaid now, so if you can dream it, you can probably find it.

Here's a little Polyvore set with some cute pieces to get you started!

Makeup Inspiration - Monster High (Part 2)

I still love Monster High, and even though I do, it still surprises me that it's so successful. I guess that even though we're in an age where cute style is diluted by sex, these freaky-fabulous little monsters can appeal to little girls. They're quintessentially quirky - and that's what's so great about them, especially when you think about the other fashion dolls out there, especially Barbie (both Monster High and Barbie are made by Mattel), who has remained essentially the same for over fifty years.

On a different note, since I last posted, my MH collection has doubled from two to four dolls (I have since acquired Holt Hyde and wave 2 "School's Out" Clawdeen Wolf). Clawdeen and Lagoona are currently competing to be my favorite doll.

Back on track. Today, I'll be explaining how to get creepy-cool makeup looks inspired by Clawdeen Wolf, Frankie Stein, and Ghoulia Yelps.

Clawdeen Wolf

Clawdeen, the daughter of the Werewolf, is the epitome of fierce. She wears a popping purple eyeshadow to match her luxe outfit, and her dark mauve lips fit into the same color family. Her look is pretty easy.

EYES: OPTIONAL: Line your lids with a black eyeliner.
Using a purple eyeshadow (preferably in a shade of violet), cover your whole eyelid.
Then, using a royal purple or deep purple eyeshadow, fill in the space between your brow and lid.
Coat your lashes with a brown-black or black mascara.

LIPS: Coat your lips with a dark mauve or berry lipstick.

Easy, huh? But it's still ultra-different from what you see every day, and it's very glam.

Frankie Stein

Frankie Stein, the daughter of Frankenstein, is the main protagonist of Monster High. Despite the fact that she's undead, she manages to stay pretty fresh-faced. Her makeup is very easy.

EYES: Using a light pink or lavender eyeshadow, cover the entire lid and the area below the brow.  Again, I'm basing these makeups on the dolls, not the box art or webisodes, so if you want to use a more purple shadow, that's fine too.
Coat your lashes with a black mascara. Frankie has the longest eyelashes out of all the dolls, so in order to achieve that look, you'll need a mascara that really extends.

FACE: OPTIONAL: Use a translucent powder to suck up any oil on your face. This is recommended to get Frankie's pale, fresh-faced look.

LIPS: Apply a red lipstick (preferably a pure red and one without pink tones), and for an extra punch to the pucker, finish with clear gloss.
Ghoulia Yelps

Ghoulia is the daughter of the Zombies, and she's super nerdy (and therefore lovable). Her makeup is kind of hard to see because of her glasses, so I'm posting a picture of the doll with the glasses off for reference. Since Ghoulia is so pale, her red lipstick really stands out. She also wears dark makeup, which reminds us she's a zombie (she's so pretty otherwise). This is probably the most complex makeup out of the three.

EYES: OPTIONAL: Line your lids with a black liner.
Cover your lower lid (from just above the liner to about halfway up) with a light brown shadow.
Use a cocoa or dark brown shadow to color the rest of the lid and all the way up to the top of the eye socket. Avoid going any higher so you don't get raccoon eyes.
Coat your lashes with a black mascara.

OPTIONAL: Wear a nerdy-chic pair of glasses (prescription or non) to add a little spunk!

LIPS: Choose a red lipstick - fire engine red isn't necessary, though it will resemble Ghoulia's makeup more than a red with pink tints. To amp the look up even more, apply a clear gloss on top of the lipstick.

These are pretty self-explanatory if you know about Monster High, but if you've never seen the dolls before, perhaps they'll provide a new source of inspiration. Do you like Monster High? Do you have any of the dolls or other merchandise? Do you watch the webisodes?

Back in business

I've decided to start blogging here again. This lil' blog needs a second chance. I find myself spending so much time looking at clothes and fashion magazines/CollegeFashion that I've realized I want to start sharing style with the world. The final icing on the cake was this old article from CollegeFashion. Check it out:

25 Reasons Why You Should Dress Up Every Day

I look around, and I see people wearing T-shirts and sweats. Life is so much more interesting than that, and it's worth celebrating and expressing.

In my next post, I will be finishing up the Monster High makeup looks, and after that, who knows where we'll go? The world is full of beauty, and we can draw inspiration from everything around us. Love yourself.

XOXO,
Sam

Makeup Inspiration - Monster High (Part 1)

I'm back! The last few days have been hectic. I'm currently rehearsing for two shows - I'm in one, and I'm on crew for the other. So naturally I haven't had much Internet time.

But lately I've been thinking about how inventive Mattel's Monster High doll line is. These extremely popular dolls wonderfully combine "freaky" with "fabulous!" I have two Monster High girls myself - Lagoona Blue and Dawn of the Dance Frankie Stein. Today is Part 1 of my Monster High-inspired makeup ideas. I am not looking to exactly copy the characters; I'm trying to emulate them for daily wear. Additionally, the eye and lip makeup work well separately if you don't want to wear them together.

Note: The dolls and the box art have slightly different eyeshadows. I will be basing the designs on the dolls.

Lagoona Blue

Lagoona Blue is the daughter of the Sea Monster, so naturally, her skin is, well...blue! In order to offset this color, she wears lavender eye shadow and pink lipstick. In order to get her look:

EYES:
Line the eyelid (as you would with eyeliner) with a pink shadow.
Using a lavender shadow, cover the rest of the eyelid. OPTIONAL: line one half of your bottom lid (the one closer to your ear) with the shadow.
Use a distinctly black mascara to get the illusion of having a million lashes - the doll only has five top lashes, but they look like they could stretch for miles!

LIPS:
Lagoona dolls come painted in two different ways. Some, like the one pictured, have hot pink lipstick. The others have slightly more purple, pearly lips. Either look is pretty - for a bold look, try the lipstick; for a softer look, try a magenta gloss (like C.O. Bigelow's Mentha Lip Tint in Magenta Mint).

Draculaura
Even though she is a vampire (as the daughter of Dracula), Draculaura wears a lot of pink. Although her skin is also pink, she uses a variety of shades to make her eyes pop. To get her look:

EYES:
Imagine your eyelid as being divided into thirds, with a completely straight stripe down the middle.
Using a lighter pink, cover the middle stripe.
Using a bright or hot pink eyeshadow, cover the rest of the lid.
OPTIONAL: With a light violet shadow, line the bottom eyelid and fill in the space between your eyelid's crease and your eyebrow. This shadow will make you look at bit more "costumey," but go ahead if you're up for the challenge. You could also add the heart under the eye, but that will really take it over the top.
Apply a black mascara.

LIPS:
Apply a bright red lipstick and, if desired, add a clear gloss to get that perfect pucker.

Cleo de Nile

Cleo de Nile is the daughter of the Mummy, and, as an ancient Egyptian princess, wears a lavish amount of makeup in deep colors to contrast her pretty tan complexion. To get her look:

EYES:
Line your lid with a black liner, creating a wing at the end. You can experiment and make the wing as broad or as fine as you like.
Using a violet shadow, cover the entire top lid.
OPTIONAL: Also line the bottom lid.
Using a darker violet shadow, cover the area between your eyelid's crease and your eyebrow.
A distinctly black mascara will be important for this look so that you can acutally see the lashes.
OPTIONAL: Apply a rhinestone underneath one of your eyes.

LIPS:
Apply a deep berry or deep wine-colored lipstick.

I hope you enjoy these looks! Next up are the other three girls - Clawdeen Wolf, Frankie Stein, and Ghoulia Yelps!
